Syrian president says Israel is ‘fighting ghosts’ and must abide by deconfliction accord Syrian president says Israel is in a 'fight against ghosts' ... Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has accused Israel of exporting crises to other countries and “fighting ghosts,” amid persistent incursions and air strikes by Israeli forces into southern Syria. Al-Sharaa was speaking at the Doha Forum in Qatar on Saturday, in a conversation with CNN’s Chief International Anchor Christiane Amanpour. Syria’s interim president again demanded that the Israel agree to reinstate the 1974 deconfliction agreement that separated Syrian and Israeli forces. Israeli forces crossed into southern Syria a year ago, as the Assad regime fell, and continue to occupy the strategic heights of Mount Hermon. The summit, which overlooks Israel, Lebanon and Syria, had been in a buffer zone for the previous 50 years. Trump’s Pentagon Chief Under Fire As Scandals Mount: Hegseth came under fire during...

EDITORIAL: West Africa’s Coup Trend Is a Warning We Must Not Ignore

West Africa’s Coup Trend Is a Warning We Must Not Ignore West Africa is slipping into a worrying cycle. In the last four years alone, the region has recorded over seven coups and attempted coups, the highest concentration anywhere in the world. From Mali and Burkina Faso to Niger, and now the strange, staged political drama - “coup”, in Guinea Bissau. The pattern is unmistakable: democratic progress is under real threat. Guinea Bissau’s episode is particularly troubling. A president announcing his own “overthrow” while freely speaking to the media is not a genuine coup; it is political theatre designed to interrupt an election. When leaders toy with democracy this openly, the damage goes beyond politics, it erodes public trust and invites instability. Nigeria’s recent scare in October 2025 adds to the tension. Reports that 16 military officers were detained over an alleged plot immediately stirred national anxiety. Even though the military denied an active coup attempt, the reaction sh...

POEM - WHAT WOULD NIGERIANS DO?

Image
What will Nigerians do? When every day begins with a thousand of worries  Yet the streets hums with laughter _ Rising every day even when it feels like lifting stones. What will Nigerians do? When the leaders barter our dreams for their ambition  Corruption stands as the watch word of our leaders  And still - we dream of a country that listens. What will Nigerians do? When economy bites and survival becomes a full time job Prices towering like a skyscraper  Yet we try to survive even when it is no longer surviving. What will Nigerians do? When injustice walks freely in daylight  Silence becomes the mother tongue of the poor  We refuse to bow, so we rise again in protest, in unity and in defiance. What will the youths do? When they find themselves stuck between dreams and reality? Unsure! Whether to remain at home or japa   Praying our wings or our roots will not betray us. What will Nigerians do? When faith becomes our last currency of cour...

A Time In History: The Nok Civilization

Image
THE NOK CIVILIZATION The Nok Civilization is one of the earliest known cultures in Nigeria and West Africa. It existed a very long time ago, around 1000 BC to 300 AD, in what is today's Northern Nigeria. The people of Nok were known for their intelligence, creativity, and unique way of life. Even though they lived thousands of years ago, their achievements still surprise historians today. One of the most outstanding things about the Nok people was their terracotta sculpture-clay figures that they're made by hand and then baked to make them strong. The sculptures were very detailed and beautiful. These artworks are some of the oldest in Africa and prove that the Nok people had advanced artistic skills. The Nok people, who lived in organized communities, were farmers who grew crops like millet and sorghum. They kept animals such as goats and cattle. Their farming skills helped them survive and build a stable society. Archaeologists also discovered that the Nok people ...

Kebbi Schoolgirls Freed After Harrowing Ordeal: Questions Langer Over Release Details Abuja, Nigeria — In a mix of relief and controversy, the 24 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, on November 17, 2025, were released on November 26. The Federal Government hailed the operation as a "successful rescue," but whispers of a possible negotiation with the kidnappers have sparked debate. The girls, taken in a brazen attack that shook the nation, were returned to their families in good health, with authorities assuring they suffered no sexual abuse. The operation, directed by President Bola Tinubu and coordinated by Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, involved the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS). However, a leaked video suggests the release might have involved a "peace deal" with the bandits, casting doubt on the government’s narrativ...

The Rwandan Genocide of 1994.

Image
THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE OF 1994 The Rwandan Genocide of 1994 remains one of the darkest moments in African and world history. In just one hundred days, nearly 800,000 people, mainly Tutsis and some moderate Hutus, were killed. The roots of this tragedy stretched back to the colonial era when Belgium divided the population into Hutus and Tutsis and favoured the Tutsi minority with political and social privileges. Even after independence, tension and resentment continued, and political leaders used these divisions to maintain power, instead of promoting unity and healing. By the early 1990s, Rwanda was unstable. Economic challenges and political disagreements grew worse, while radio broadcasts spread hateful propaganda that described Tutsis as enemies. Everything changed on April 6th, 1994, when the president’s plane was shot down. This event triggered a violent wave of killings across the country. Militias and ordinary citizens were encouraged to attack their neighbours based ...

Book Review: The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel

Image
- A Simple Guide to Understanding Yourself Through Money Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money is one of those rare finance books that feels less like a lesson on money and more like a lesson on life. Instead of formulas, charts, or complicated investment theories, Housel focuses on the one thing that truly shapes financial outcomes: human behavior. Reading The Psychology of Money felt like having a calm, honest conversation about life, and not just finance. Through simple, everyday stories, Housel explains why we save, spend, fear, and chase money the way we do, showing how our personal experiences quietly influence our financial decisions. It made me reflect on my own habits, impatience, and the pressure to always want “more.” One of the strongest reminders is that peace of mind matters far more than flashy success. My favorite lesson is that true wealth is quiet. It’s the money you don’t show, the freedom you build slowly, and the discipline no one sees. This perspecti...

The rising wave of insecurity in Nigeria has become one of the most troubling realities of daily life. Every day seems to bring another story of kidnappings, bandit attacks, killings, or violent robberies. Sadly, many people barely react anymore, even though the fear remains deep within us. As a young Nigerian, it is painful to watch insecurity grow to the point where ordinary life now feels unsafe and unpredictable. Across the country, families are mourning loved ones, and parents are anxious whenever their children travel. Many people avoid roads they once used freely. Even places of worship, which should be safe sanctuaries, are no longer spared. The recent attack in Kwara State, where armed men entered a church, killed worshippers, and kidnapped several people, is a clear reminder of how far Nigeria has fallen. When criminals can enter a church and abduct people without fear, it shows that something is fundamentally wrong with our security system. What makes this crisis...

NIGERIA AS A COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN

Image
NIGERIA AS A COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN Relations between the United States and Nigeria have entered a tense phase following U.S. recent decision to redesigned Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for alleged violation of religious freedom. The move was announced in late October 2025, has drawn strong reaction from Abuja and reignited diplomatic friction. The situation worsened in early November when the U.S  President Donald Trump accused Nigeria of permitting a “Christian genocide “and threatened possible U.S military intervention . His statement sparked outrage across Nigeria, with government officials dismissing the allegation as false and dangerous. Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said the country’s conflicts originated from banditry and terrorism not religion.  Despite political issues, trade ties remain strong. The U.S is Nigeria sixth largest export destination, mainly for crude oil and gas.  Analyst warns that continuous diplomatic...

The world never stops spinning, and neither do the headlines. From global diplomacy to celebrity drama, Nigeria finds itself once again in the spotlight, navigating both political pressure and social spectacle. United States - Nigeria relations remain at a stalemate, as global headlines reignited debate over U.S. - Nigeria ties. U.S. President Donald Trump accused the Nigerian government of allowing Christian killings, even hinting at military action, while the U.S. designated Nigeria a country of particular concern. These moves have reignited old conversations about security, governance, and global perception. Social critic and Human rights activist Dele Farotimi, argues that Trump’s words should be read as a wake-up call, not a war threat. It is a reminder that Nigeria’s problem isn’t foreign criticism but domestic negligence. He calls out the government’s failure to protect citizens and its habit of masking terrorism with euphemisms like “banditry" or "farmers...

Country in Focus: Singapore — A Little Great Nation

Image
Most times, when you think of powerful nations, you imagine large countries with vast lands, rich natural resources, and huge populations. However, Singapore denies such claims and assumptions. Singapore is a small island nation located in Southeast Asia. It's so small that it could fit into Lagos multiple times, yet it stands among the richest and most developed countries in the world. When Singapore gained independence in 1965, it had no natural resources, no army, and very few industries and many doubted that it could survive. This was proved wrong, obviously, because under the leadership of its first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, the country focused on developing its people, building education, and maintaining a clean and efficient government. Within decades, it rose from poverty to prosperity and became a global center for business, technology, and innovation. Singapore is also famous for its cleanliness and strict laws. Littering, spitting, or chewing gum in publi...

A collector of just about anything and everything. Robert Ripley was never more delighted than when he happened to come across something really bizarre on one of his excursions. He was especially pleased if he could take it home with him. Shrunken heads, bone necklaces and bowls, medieval torture devices- these were the kind of keepsakes he liked best, and they all eventually found places of honor in his home.        In keeping with Robert Ripley's fascination with the bizarre, it's not surprising that he was partial to those BELIEVE it or NOT! cartoons that dealt with the unexplainable. Robert Ripley loved a good story if it happened to be about something ghoulish- such as the dying sculptor who carved a statue of himself, then transferred his own eyebrows, eyelashes, nails and teeth to it- he liked i...
