The diplomat we will be discussing is One of the most renowned female diplomats ,Joy Ogwu . A Nigerian scholar diplomat who broke numerous barriers in her career.
Joy Ogwu was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and grew up in a patriarchal society where women were often marginalized in politics and diplomacy. Despite these challenges, she pursued her education with determination, earning her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Political Science from Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA. She later completed her Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in 1977.
Ogwu's impressive career spanned over three decades, which she held several prestigious positions. She served as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2008 to 2017, making her the country's first female Permanent Representative to the UN.
Ogwu was Nigeria's Foreign Minister from August 2006 to May 2007, the second female to hold this position after Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
LongShe served on the UN Security Council twice, in 2010/2011 and 2014/2015, focusing on Women, Peace, and Security; Security Sector Reform; and global conflicts.
Ogwu's contributions to diplomacy and international relations are invaluable. She inspired many young girls to pursue careers in public service. Her work on the UN Security Council and other international platforms has had a lasting impact on global peace and security.
Ogwu received numerous awards and recognition for her outstanding service, including praise from President Bola Tinubu, who described her as "a trailblazer who rose to the highest level of her vocation."
