Corporate Day
By Taiwo Ramat
The Corporate Day organised as part of the ongoing IRSA Week drew significant disappointment on Wednesday, as poor turnout from upper-level students and inconsistent representation from the executive body left fresh students; who had dressed and prepared according to the brief feeling let down.
Only the Vice President Showed Up
According to the flyer disseminated by the Public Relations Officer (PRO), students of the department were expected to dress diplomatically, represent a country of their choice, and prepare a short note on the country they represented. It was a clear, structured brief; one that the majority of Part 1 students honoured.
The same could not be said for the rest of the department. Of the entire executive body, only the Vice President turned up in representation of a country, leaving the event visibly thin on participation from the very people expected to lead it.
The PRO's Contradiction
When students approached the PRO to ask which country he was representing, his response raised eyebrows. "I am not representing any country," he told them. "I am just dressed in corporate since I will be the one doing the video, he added.
This was the same officer responsible for the flyer that directed students to represent countries and prepare accompanying notes. The contradiction was not lost on students who had taken the brief seriously.
It was, however, later confirmed by some students that the PRO eventually recorded a video of himself representing a country.
Fresh Students Speak Out
For many Part 1 students who had dressed and prepared according to the event's guidelines, the low turnout from other levels in the department was a difficult pill to swallow.
"Are they forcing activities on us, or are we the only members of this department?" one student told DSNA, voicing the frustration of peers who had shown up in good faith only to find themselves largely alone in doing so.
Several executives and SRC members were absent from the event entirely. Those who were present, sources told DSNA, did not set a standard befitting their positions.
What Comes Next And What Has Not Been Communicated
IRSA Week continues with the HoD's Cup final and a Movie Night. As of the time of this report, only the flyer for the HoD's Cup final has been shared with students. No communication regarding the Movie Night has been issued, leaving students, once again, in the dark about an activity they are presumably expected to attend.
If Corporate Day was a test of the administration's ability to mobilise and lead its student body, the results were difficult to ignore. The question now is whether the remaining events of IRSA Week will tell a different story.
