Staylite Package
By Taiwo Ramat
Conversations are going around in the Department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University and this time, it is not just the fresh students talking. The Staylite have thoughts too, and they centre around one thing: the annual due.
From a Wristband to a Mini Notebook
Last year, paying your annual due got you a wristband for one thousand and five hundred naira. This year, it is a mini notebook for two thousand naira. Whether that feels like progress depends entirely on who you ask.
A Part 3 Student Had a Change of Heart
Interestingly, one Part 3 student who had not yet paid her annual due decided to do so after seeing how other Staylite received the package. Small shift, but worth noting.
"The Book Is Worth It" — Hon. Akinbode David
Part 2 Honorable Member Akinbode David told DSNA he had no complaints about the book he received. "The book is worth the money," he said. As for his classmates who have not paid, he kept it simple; the choice is theirs, though he has already made them understand the importance of paying and benefits attached to it.
He did share one honest observation though: students would likely pay more willingly if academic consequences were tied to it and lecturers got involved. He is hoping for better numbers going forward.
Fresh Perspective
One Part 2 student who transferred from the Department of Portuguese, Foreign Languages was spotted collecting her package from the Vice President with a smile. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes sees things differently.
One Thing Worth Remembering
Beneath all the conversation about value and worth, there is something that does not change ; the annual due is compulsory. And for students in Part 4, it is a clearance requirement. The decision to pay or not may feel personal now, but it has consequences that show up later.
For now, the Staylite are talking. Whether the administration is listening is the next question.
