IRSRC IMPEACHES IRSA PRESIDENT; ACCOUNTABILITY CONCERNS PERSIST IN HARBINGER ADMINISTRATION
By Taiwo Ramat

The International Relations Students' Representative Council (IRSRC) has officially impeached the President of the International Relations Students' Association (IRSA), Akinpelu Samuel Olalekan, following a parliamentary sitting held on Friday, 3rd July, 2026.
The impeachment, which took effect immediately, came after the President had received two formal queries from the House. In its resolution, the Council cited a pattern of administrative failures that it deemed incompatible with the responsibilities of the office.
Grounds for Impeachment
The House considered several concerns before arriving at its decision. These included delays in the execution of executive duties, failure to present an updated State of the Association report despite assurances to Congress, and delays in sending official correspondence relating to the parliamentary sitting which resulted in the President's absence from the session.
Also noted were delays in the production and distribution of the Freshers' Package, including unfulfilled commitments regarding the departmental notebook, which generated dissatisfaction among fresh students. The House further raised concerns about the discharge of constitutional responsibilities and the fulfilment of manifesto commitments made to the student body.
The impeached President retains the constitutional right to appeal the decision and defend himself before the Departmental Court of Justice, in accordance with the provisions of the Association's Constitution.

The notice was signed by the Clerk of the House, Ademuyiwa Rachel; the Deputy Speaker, Oyelowo Michael Adeola; and the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Adedokun Grace Inioluwa.

State of the Association Report: A Collective Failure?
While the failure to present an updated State of the Association report was among the grounds cited for President Akinpelu Samuel Olalekan's impeachment, a more pressing question now emerges;one that the student body deserves an honest answer to.
The President has been removed. Yet, as of the time of this report, neither the General Secretary nor the Vice President has taken responsibility for producing or circulating the updated State of the Association to the generality of IRSA students.
This raises a fundamental concern: was the impeachment truly about accountability, or was it convenient to place the weight of a collective failure on one person? If the executives who remain in office cannot fulfil this basic obligation even after the President's removal, then the student body must begin to ask harder questions; not just about who was impeached, but about the administration as a whole.

IFEMUN Letter Goes Unacknowledged
On 1st July, 2026, two days before the impeachment, the Staff Adviser of the Ife Model United Nations (IFEMUN) wrote to the generality of IRSA through the Head of Department, seeking the full support of the department and encouraging student participation in the conference's 5th edition, themed Multilateralism in the Age of AI: Governance, Security & International Cooperation.
The letter, addressed to the entire student body, was neither relayed by the General Secretary nor the Vice President. Students in the department remain largely unaware of the conference and its call for participation, raising fresh questions about the administration's commitment to the interests of the student body beyond internal politics.

Freshers' Package: The Wait Continues
With two days remaining to the promised distribution date, fresh students in the department are still anticipating the delivery of their Freshers' Package. The delay, already cited as a ground for impeachment, continues to linger and all eyes are on the administration to honour this outstanding commitment.

Secretariat: AC Fixed, Cobwebs Remain
The leaking air conditioner in the IRSA secretariat has been repaired, a development that will be welcomed by students who use the space. However, cobwebs remain visible within the secretariat, pointing to a need for more thorough attention to the upkeep of the student body's official space.

IRSA Week: Corporate Day Left in the Dark
The IRSA Week is currently underway, with the HoD's Cup already in progress. However, students have yet to receive any official information regarding the Corporate Day planned as part of the week's activities. As it stands, students are left to wonder whether they are simply expected to appear in corporate attire without prior communication or guidance from the executives.
The silence around Corporate Day is the latest in a series of communication gaps that have defined this administration and one that the student body deserves a clear answer to.
