NIGERIA AS A COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN

NIGERIA AS A COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN
Relations between the United States and Nigeria have entered a tense phase following U.S. recent decision to redesigned Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for alleged violation of religious freedom. The move was announced in late October 2025, has drawn strong reaction from Abuja and reignited diplomatic friction.
The situation worsened in early November when the U.S  President Donald Trump accused Nigeria of permitting a “Christian genocide “and threatened possible U.S military intervention . His statement sparked outrage across Nigeria, with government officials dismissing the allegation as false and dangerous. Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said the country’s conflicts originated from banditry and terrorism not religion.
Despite political issues, trade ties remain strong. The U.S is Nigeria sixth largest export destination, mainly for crude oil and gas.  Analyst warns that continuous diplomatic issues could affect foreign investment and visa policies, which was already tightened this year to single entry , three month validity for Nigerians.
Reactions are divided in Nigeria . Sheikh Ahmad Gumi urged Nigeria to cut diplomatic ties with U.S, which the Christian association of Nigeria (CAN ) called for peaceful engagement. Former head of state Abdulsalam Abubakar appealed for restraint and dialogue.
Internationally China and ECOWAS have urged  U.S. not to interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs. Law makers in the United States have also termed Trump’s statement as reckless.
Diplomatic discussion are ongoing to ease the tension. President Bola Tinubu’s administration insists Nigeria welcomes cooperation against terrorism but will “never allow foreign troops on its soil.”
Analyst believe the partnership, though strained will help in mutual interest in  security, trade and regional stability.
