A TIME IN HISTORY: THE CIVIL WAR

Image
The Nigerian Civil War, a defining event in the nation's history, erupted in 1967 and lasted until 1970. The roots of the conflict lay in a complex mix of ethnic, religious, and political rivalries that had been brewing since Nigeria's independence in 1960. The country was, and still is, a diverse nation, with numerous ethnic groups, the most prominent being the Hausa-Fulani in the north, the Yoruba in the southwest, and the Igbo in the southeast. These groups had different cultural backgrounds, economic interests, and political aspirations, which often led to tensions and conflicts. The war began after the Eastern Region, largely inhabited by the Igbo people, declared its secession from Nigeria, forming the Republic of Biafra. This declaration was a response to a series of events, including a military coup and counter-coup, which led to the massacre of thousands of Igbo people living in the north. The leader of Biafra, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, argued that the I...

STILL LEARNING, STILL STANDING πŸ₯Ή

Image
Still Learning, Still Standing Growing up, I became aware early of the heavy cost of being educated. Was it the harsh alarm that shattered my sleep each morning, or the long journeys at dawn just to obey school rules and routines? Perhaps it was being confined within four classroom walls, my mind pierced by sharp strands of knowledge, disciplined and shaped by different teachers, each leaving their mark in their own strict ways. As the years passed, the struggle did not disappear; it only changed its shape. The simple classrooms of childhood slowly gave way to crowded lecture halls, heavier textbooks, and deeper expectations. Education began to demand more than punctuality and obedience; it demanded sacrifice. There were days when hunger competed with concentration, when financial difficulties threatened continuity, and when exhaustion made learning feel like punishment rather than privilege. Now, as a university studen...

Colonial Administration in Ghana

Image
COLONIAL ADMINISTRATION:GHANA Prior to colonial administration in Ghana or Gold coast as it was called until 1957 , the European main interest in the territory was the gold. It was very much available on the coast in exchange for European exports such as beads, cloth, ammunition etc. Colonial administration by the British began formally in 1874 up until independence in 1957. This system emerged after the British defeated indigenous resistance, especially from the Asante Empire, and formally declared the Gold Coast a Crown Colony. The colonial administration was designed mainly to maintain law and order, facilitate economic exploitation, and secure British political interests. Before colonial rule, the area that later became Ghana was made up of well-organized traditional states such as the Asante, Fante, Dagomba, and Gonja. These societies had established political institutions and systems of governance. However, British intervention gradually undermined these indigenous sy...

Colonial Administration in South Africa

Image
Colonial administration in South Africa was characterized by settler control, racial discrimination, economic exploitation and marginalization of indigenous people. The systems of control was established by European powers, mainly the Dutch and later the British over the territory and its indigenous population from the 17th and the early 20th centuries.   The Dutch East India company (VOC) first established colonial rule in South Africa in 1652 when Jan Van Riebeeck founded a refreshment station at the cape of Good Hope. The VOC governed the cape as a commercial colony and administration was carried out by company official who combined executive, legislative and judicial powers. Indigenous communities such as Khoikhoi and San were dispossed of their land while imported slaves from East Africa and Asia were used for labor. The Dutch settlers gradually expanded inland and exercising local authority with minimal oversight from the company.      In 1806,...

Editorial - Silence, Power and Democracy: Lessons from Uganda and the World.

Image
Sometimes, silence says more than words ever could. Whether it’s a government staying quiet in an international crisis or citizens being silenced at home, what isn’t said often reveals the balance of power, control, and fear. Recent events from the contested Uganda presidential election to tensions involving the USA, Venezuela, and Greenland, show how both silence and speech are tools in politics, and how democracy can be fragile when voices are suppressed. Uganda’s recent Presidential election, January 2026 is a striking example. President Yoweri Museveni, in power for over 40 years, won a seventh term, even as millions of citizens hoped for real change. Opposition leader Bobi Wine called the results “fake,” citing ballot irregularities, voter intimidation, and arrests, while an internet blackout blocked independent reporting. Heavy security presence created fear, making participation difficult. On paper, there was an election, but in practice, democracy struggled to breat...
