A HOW-TO-GUIDE ON PREPARING FOR TESTS AND EXAMS

The semester is drawing to a close and it’s no news that we’re currently in our test period and exams are fast approaching.
You should at least have an idea of what your courses are about, and if per adventure you don’t, it’s not too late to start studying from NOW.

Here’s a detailed guide on how to study smart, not hard.

1. Understand the Course and the Exam Format

Ask yourself:

  • What topics are included?
  • Is any past question or marking scheme available?
  • What’s the exam format? (Essays, short answers, calculations, CBT, etc.)

2. Create a Simple Study Plan

You don’t need a fancy timetable — just a realistic one.

How to do it:

  • List all courses
  • Rate them (Easy, Moderate, or Difficult)
  • Allocate more time to difficult topics
  • Study in 45–60 minute blocks with 10–15 minute breaks

Consistency beats cramming.

3. Use Active Study Methods (Not Just Reading)

Reading alone gives false confidence.

Best techniques:

  • Active Recall:
Close your book and write or say everything you remember.
  • Blurting Method:
Read → Close book → Write all you know → Check → Repeat
  • Teach someone:
If you can explain it simply, you understand it.

4. Practice with Questions

  • Answer past questions
  • Practice essay outlines
  • Mark your work honestly
  • Identify what you missed and correct it accordingly

Break weak areas into smaller parts.
Use textbooks or PDFs.
Watch short explanation videos.

Your weakest topic can become your strongest advantage.

5. Smart Revision

Revision is not relearning everything. Focus on:

  • Key definitions
  • Formulas
  • Theories & scholars
  • Mistakes you made

Revise the same topic multiple times across days.

6. Take Care of Your Body & Mind

A tired brain cannot perform.

  • Sleep 6–8 hours (especially before the exam)
  • Drink water
  • Eat light, balanced meals
  • Go on short walks or stretch
  • Avoid comparing yourself to others

Don’t study all night before an exam — it hurts more than it helps.

On the Day of the Exam/Test

  • Review summaries only
  • Stay calm and confident
  • Start with questions you know
  • Manage time
  • If stuck, move on and return later
  • Don’t overthink what you’ve written

Good exam preparation is about strategy + consistency + confidence.
If you follow these tips, get ready to ace your papers.

All the best!
