Faculty Update
The Faculty of Administration at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) took a significant step in promoting intellectual discussion by hosting its inaugural Distinguished Personality Lecture, themed "Export-Led Economic Growth". Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, delivered a thought-provoking keynote address, emphasizing the need for Nigeria to shift from relying on raw material exports to driving growth through innovation.
Dr. Adedeji highlighted Nigeria's stagnant export performance, noting the country's failure to diversify its economy and produce complex goods. He stressed that ideas-driven growth, leveraging innovation and technological advancements, is crucial for sustainable economic prosperity. He cited examples of countries that have successfully transformed their economies through innovation and urged Nigeria to follow suit.
The lecture drew a diverse audience, including academics, administrators, and students, with OAU Vice Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire as chief host. Dr. Adedeji's contributions to national development earned him multiple awards from campus organizations, recognizing his efforts to promote economic growth and development in Nigeria.
The event was engaging, with cultural performances adding to the vibrant atmosphere. A dance troupe and Yoruba poetry recitation entertained the audience, showcasing OAU's rich cultural heritage. Dr. Adedeji also invited students to submit summaries of his speech, offering a sponsorship opportunity to 20 participants, encouraging them to develop innovative solutions to Nigeria's economic challenges.
The lecture highlighted the importance of intellectual discourse in driving economic growth and development in Nigeria. It provided a platform for stakeholders to engage with critical issues affecting the country's economy and explore innovative solutions. The Faculty of Administration's initiative is commendable, and it's hoped that such events will continue to inspire and shape Nigeria's economic future.
