Selected Universities and their football club equivalents
Lawal Shereef
With over 150 universities in the country, the religious, secular, socialist, foreign groomed etc universities have ably complemented the diversity of the nation.
But whilst the country boasts of a large number of higher institutions, some have by far displaced the others in rankings, performance and peculiarities.
It is along these lines we have drawn a humourous connections between Unis and football clubs;
Real Madrid - University of Ibadan
While you might believe there is little connection between a football club and an Institution of higher learning, you will be surprised to know they actually share some things in common.
The first degree awarding University in Nigeria,UI created before Nigeria gained independence actually shares the qualities of age, history and achievements with the Spain based football club.
They are both old, have a lot of history to tell and have achievements to show alongside it,Real Madrid just won the Spanish league even after winning the elite European UEFA Champions league a record 4 on a row,the University of Ibadan likewise has also been dominating academic scenes in the country and is currently believed to be the best University in the country.
UNILAG - MAN UTD
The University of Lagos shares a lot of similar qualities with the England based Manchester United football club.
The first generation University has a lot of history same as the Manchester based club. Both organizations are still giants in their game but they are slowly giving up for newer faces to take their spaces.
Nevertheless, they are still sugar cakes and hot destinations for students and star football names alike. They say they live on past glory.
Leipzig - Covenant
While you might think a Covenant University- Leipzig combo is off as there is little connection between a football club in Germany and a church owned Nigerian University, you will be surprised to find out they share similar qualities on a closer look.
Covenant University is a relatively new University created in 2002 and based in Ota and the Leipzig fc based in Germany is also a relatively new football club created in 2009.
Their shared similarities of relative newness is nothing compared to the achievements they have amassed in this short period of time. Leipzig has positioned itself as one of the deadliest and best teams in Europe while shooting from the German 5th division to the UCL semi-final in just 11 years of history,Covenant University likewise is now regarded as one of the best Universities in the country as it has consistently been ranked in the top 5 of Nigerian Universities beating it's peers and older universities to take the top spot whilst enjoying a bouyant international image.
Manchester city - UNIABUJA
The Manchester based football clubs and the Abuja based University have similar qualities of money being pumped into them.
They boast of riches, oil money to be precise. While Manchester city has been in existence before the Saudi take over,Uniabuja was created with the money gained from the exploration of oil, they still have more than a fair share of the petrodollars.
The worrying thing is that ,while the money was pumped into them to topple prior giant universities or existing giant clubs and be the best, they have fallen short of expectations. The University of Abuja has not been able to steal the shine from first generation universities same as Manchester city which has failed to deliver the UCL.
OAU - Bayern Munich
They are both giants in their respective fields.
While Bayern Munich trashes teams seamlessly and amass trophies endlessly, the Ife based first generation Nigerian University has not disappointed also. It is one of the most popular and best Universities in the country, always consistently being in the top 5 and enjoys a good reputation internationally.
While you might think this is all,you would be found wrong as they also share an abstract feature of rigidity, toughness and grid like systems, nevertheless we enjoy and praise this great institutions.
LAUTECH - Arsenal FC
Dont wonder too much as things are same on both sides of the Atlantic,Lautech doing its thing in Nigeria and Arsenal doing its thing in England.
Lautech was jointly created by the Osun and Oyo state governments and it was tipped to be a success until loopholes started showing, differences started manifesting and the University being riddled with çonflicts, the University hasn't gotten itself ever since despite it's promising stature, nevertheless, they have managed to rake in good repute for themselves though inconsistently. Likewise the Arsenal fc which has always been a shadow hero and hasn't won a champions league despite it's repute, they have also had their share of çonflicts with the Ozil- Arsenal row the latest they have played out.
So believe me guys, things aren't always greener on the other side.
I hope I have been able to drive in some points, this write up is written only for humour and based only on the features described and not in all aspects, pls enjoy, banter, add yours, give reviews and get back at us for your comments.
