Country in Focus: New Zealand

If you ever wondered what nation was the first in the world to grant women the right to vote, then know today that it's New Zealand.

New Zealand is an island nation in the southwest Pacific that has a population of approximately 5.3 million people. Its capital city is Wellington, while Auckland is the largest and most populated city. Officially, they speak English, Māori, and their own sign language. For their currency, they trade with the New Zealand Dollar (NZD).

The first people to settle in the modern territory of New Zealand were known as Māori who were Polynesian navigators that arrived in what is known as waka (voyaging canoes). They developed a rich, distinct culture based on whānau (kinship), iwi (tribal groups) and had very deep spiritual ties to land and nature. But by 1642, European explorers had their first contact with the Island and it eventually became a British colony. The nation later gained full independence in 1986 but still remains a member of Commonwealth Nations.

New Zealanders have a rich culture that mixes Māori traditions, British influence, and other modern multicultural communities. They are often called 'Kiwis' as they are commonly known to be friendly, relaxed, and outdoor people.

In terms of governance, New Zealand operates as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy. While the British monarch is officially the head of state, the country is governed by a prime minister and members of parliament chosen through democratic elections. New Zealand is internationally respected for its low levels of corruption, strong legal institutions, and commitment to human rights. It also became the first self-governing nation in the world to grant women the right to vote in 1893, an achievement that remains an important part of its history.

A unique feature of New Zealand is its unusual wildlife. Because the islands were isolated for millions of years, many rare species like the kiwi bird (which, by the way, cannot fly), the tuatara reptile, and the intelligent kea parrot. It is also widely known for its natural beauty. The country contains mountains, volcanoes, forests, beaches, lakes, and glaciers that attract millions of tourists each year.

In conclusion, New Zealand is a country with an intriguing history, a rich and diverse culture, a stable democratic government, and extraordinary natural beauty. As such, New Zealand continues to stand out as one of the most admired countries globally.
