Colonised Minds



Starting from the Berlin Conference,
Where the fate of all African lands
Was drawn with no single African man
in sight.
They wrote our destinies without us knowing.
They claimed to own the lands,
the same lands our ancestors toiled and lived upon.
They claimed to have brought God into our lands
While pursuing our gold earnestly,
preaching the kingdom of Heaven
While chasing the things of the world,
leaving Africa to munch on the remnants.
The African way of living is referred to as uncivilized.
The attire is regarded as awkward,
and the traditional shrine
is deemed unbefitting.
It wasn’t mere acts of bias anymore.
It became a total reconstruction
of human civilization.
There is now little about us
that wasn’t shaped by our former colonizers.
They altered our way of living,
believing their language superior,
as though ours could never tell stories of greatness.
We may think we are free from the past,
but no, we are not.
Because they have also colonized our minds.
We still speak and think
in the white man’s language.

I reach Iwo Road where Micra drivers no gree let trailers move. Even Maruwa, dat three-wheeler, dey try overtake bus. Iwo Road underbridge no be am at all, di place too crowdy.
