DIPLOMAT OF THE WEEK

URSULA VON DER LEYEN

Born on October 8, 1958, in Brussels, Belgium, she comes from a prominent political family. Her father, Ernst Albrecht, was a senior European Union civil servant and former Prime Minister of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany.

Ursula Von Der Leyen is a German politician who has served as the President of the European Commission since December 2019. She studied economics at the University of Gƶttingen and then medicine at the Hanover Medical School, where she earned her medical degree. She later completed her residency and received a Master's degree in Public Health from the London School of Economics.

Her political career began in the early 2000s when she joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and became a member of the Bundestag, the German federal parliament, in 2005. She held various ministerial positions in the German government, including Minister of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth from 2005 to 2009, and Minister of Labour and Social Affairs from 2009 to 2013.

In 2013, Ursula Von Der Leyen was appointed as Germany's Minister of Defence, becoming the first woman to hold that position. During her tenure, she faced criticism over military readiness and procurement issues but implemented reforms aimed at modernizing the German armed forces.

In 2019, Ursula Von Der Leyen was nominated by the European Council to become the next President of the European Commission, succeeding Jean-Claude Juncker. Her nomination was controversial and faced opposition within the European Parliament, but she ultimately secured enough votes to assume the role.

As President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen has focused on issues as climate change, digital transformation, and the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She has advocated for a stronger and more United European Union, pushing for initiatives to enhance the EU's global competitiveness and address pressing challenges. While her tenure has been marked by both achievements and controversies, Ursula Von Der Leyen remains a significant figure in European politics, playing a key role in shaping the future direction of the European Union.
