Lawal Shereef The Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi has kicked against the Oyo State Governor's plan to turn the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, to a multi-campus institution. The Vice Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Navy, Capt. Adejumo Ajao (retd)has also called on the governor to rescind the move. Lawal Shereef Another crises might just be around the corner over the 40 billion earned allowance by the University unions as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) kicks against the mode of disbursement of the just approved allowances. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige on Friday had announced to the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU that the Earned Allowances has been increased to N40 billion to be shared by the four university-based unions  But the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, has warned the government to ensure that the money passed through the Universities Councils which have the template of sharing formula. SSANU also warned government to be wary of any group or union that would present any payment platform apart from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, which is the one recognized by government to curb corruption within the system. !!RE...

Lawal Shereef The Academic Staff Union of Universities has agreed to call of its eight-month strike after it's seventh meeting with the Federal government. The union leadership reached the consensus during a meeting with the government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment,  Dr Chris Ngige, in Abuja, on Friday. Recall that DSNA earlier reported that  Ngige optimistic ASUU will call off strike soon The government also pledged to increase the total payment to the union to N70 billion. This is happening one week after the Federal Government  accepted the demand by the ASUU that they be exempted from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System. ASUU strike: Ngige optimistic Universities will resume soon

Lawal Shereef The federal government on Friday has continued negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to put an end to the eight-month-old strike action. ASUU embarked on a nationwide strike on March 23 to demand “revitalisation allowance”, earned academic allowances, renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, visitation panels, among other demands. The federal government, last Friday, had made some concessions to the striking university lecturers through their union which they promised to get back at the government for.  The government offered N65 billion to Nigerian universities to address some of the lecturers’ demands. The government also agreed to pay the lecturers their outstanding salaries using an older payment platform, GIFMIS, different from the controversial IPPIS. Lawal Shereef Various Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branches are divided as to whether to call of the 8-month-old strike after the Federal Government's latest offers. The union will harmonise the positions of zones and branches at a meeting in Abuja today. While some branches have favoured the calling off of the strike,some others are bent on FG fulfilling all the clauses before the strike is called off,with this,the National body might resort to voting to decide their stance. The Ahmadu Bello University branch agreed with the government on the N40 billion Earned Academic Allowance (EAA). The branch, however, called for payment of the allowance before the strike will be called off. Lecturers at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Delta State, said negotiations with the Federal Government must be concluded before the strike is called off. Lawal Shereef Things  seem to be falling into place for Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as her opponent in the race for the World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General seat,Yoo Myung-hee is set to withdraw her candidacy. A report by Washington Trade Daily has said that South Korea has decided to withdraw its candidate from the WTO top job.  Washington Trade Daily quoted sources as saying South Korea has notified the US of its decision and is expected to make it public “in the coming days.” The report further stated: “Washington refused to accept the recommendation made by the selection panel chaired by General Council Chair Ambassador David Walker that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala is the candidate most likely of the two to attract consensus because she clearly carried the largest support by members in the final round and clearly enjoyed broad support from members from all levels of development and from all geographic regions and has done so throughout the process. Lawal Shereef The federal government will begin limiting the entry point of teaching only to individuals with second class upper and first-class divisions,the ministry of education permanent secretary,Sonny Echono disclosed on Saturday.  Echnono said teachers without requisite qualifications, competencies and practicing license are presently migrated out of the Nigerian Teaching Service.  "President Buhari had earlier stated that only the best should be allowed to teach.
