Poll: Nigerians want embassy closed after attack in Ghana
In what came as a shock, a Ghanian businessman allegedly supervised the demolition of some apartments in the Nigerian high commission situated in Accra, Ghana's capital on Sunday. The obviously furious businessman, who invaded the embassy with armed men, had accused the commission of encroaching on his land.
The Nigerian government has since condemned the attacks on the building with Geoffery Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, describing the incident as "outrageous and criminal."
Meanwhile, many Nigerians believe that the condemnation is not enough as Ghana must be made to face the reality of its citizens' action.
In a Facebook poll , 71% of over one thousand Nigerians who voted firmly believed that the embassy should be closed down. 29%, however, said Ghana must pay compensation for the demolition.
A social media user, Micheal wrote: "It's of no use that the embassy is there, cos they don't assist Nigerians living in Ghana, so maybe they assume that it's high time they demolish the place and use it for there own good as well since there economy is on the rise and need space in the choice area, you can go to them and you'll be shocked the amount of Nigerians in detention and you claim you have a consulate."
Another one wrote: "Charity begins at home. If Nigeria didn't treat her citizens like c'rap, no country will treat us like one."
A Facebook user who goes by the name Emmanuel Balogun also said "Tell them ' our continued diplomatic relationship is no longer appropriate' -- Then recall our high commissioner there and send theirs back pronto!"
