Current President: Santiago Peña

Paraguay is a landlocked country in the heart of South America. It shares borders with Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina and is divided by the Paraguay River into the Eastern Region and the vast Chaco region in the west. Its capital and largest city is Asunción.

Paraguay gained independence from Spain in 1811 and has a history marked by both resilience and hardship. The country suffered greatly during the War of the Triple Alliance, a conflict against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay that devastated its population and economy. Today, Paraguay is a democratic republic with an elected president and a constitutional system of government.

The Paraguayan economy is driven mainly by agriculture, livestock farming and hydroelectric power. It is one of the world's leading exporters of soybean and beef, while the Itaipu Dam, shared with Brazil, generates enormous amounts of electricity and provides significant national revenue. Despite steady economic growth, poverty, income inequality and dependence on agricultural exports remain important challenges.

Another distinctive feature is its culture and language. It is among the few countries in the Americas where an indigenous language, Guaraní, is spoken by most of the population alongside Spanish. Traditional music, dance, crafts and customs remain central to national identity.

In summary, Paraguay is a unique South American nation known for its rich cultural heritage, bilingual society, agricultural strength and abundant hydroelectric resources. Although it faces challenges such as corruption, environmental concerns and uneven development, the country continues to grow while preserving the traditions and identity that make it distinct within South America.
