WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2027: A UNIFIED OPPOSITION OR ANOTHER TINUBU VICTORY
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, President Bola Tinubu's political landscape is shaped by both consolidation within his party and mounting challenges from the opposition.
On May 22, 2025, the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) officially endorsed President Tinubu as its sole candidate for the upcoming election. This endorsement, which coincided with the second anniversary of his presidency, was accompanied by praise for his economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and currency liberalization, which the APC claims have revitalized the economy. However, these measures have also triggered a significant cost-of-living crisis, drawing widespread domestic criticism. Nonetheless, the endorsement firmly positions Tinubu as the frontrunner for re-election.
In March 2025, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar announced the formation of a coalition with key political figures, including the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The alliance, revealed during a press conference in Abuja, aims to unseat Tinubu in 2027. The coalition also condemned the president’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it unconstitutional and a threat to democratic governance.
Beyond this alliance, other opposition parties have expressed readiness to join forces against the APC. The New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) declared its willingness to collaborate in forming a united front. Similarly, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and the National Consultative Front (NCFront) have supported the creation of a broad-based alliance, with discussions of a so-called “granite alliance”.
