*Movie Review on 'Love In Every Word' by Omoni Oboli*
Recently, it seems everywhere you turn, someone is either praising an "Achalugo" or you hear the familiar "Odogwu, please." It's no doubt that Omoni Oboli's Nollywood film has gained much praise.
The story follows Chioma (aka BamBam), a woman doggedly pursuing her career goals whilst dealing with unbecoming partners. She unexpectedly falls for a man far from what she intended, Obiora (aka Uzor Arukwe); a man of wealth and a core Igbo accent you would never miss. At first, she resists his efforts to marry her because of past memories of her father, who was just like Obiora, but with more tricks up his sleeve.
This Nollywood story has resonated with the vast majority of its audience, receiving many praises and becoming a ground for viral memes and social media trends. In fact, many youngsters now seem to desire such a kind of love. It seems to also highlight actual problems people face in relationships, as the whole back-and-forth on Chioma's side feels relatable.
However, as with every other interesting movie, there is much controversy. Many critics have tagged the story as "very predictable," just like almost all Nigerian movies, and argue that it does not deserve all the hype it's getting. Others believe the movie is somewhat far-fetched and not entirely in touch with reality, as love isn’t always as glamorous or straightforward as the film projects.
Overall, the public seems to really connect with the movie despite its flaws. Whether you view it as an overly romanticized tale or a heartwarming portrayal of love, Love in Every Word has undoubtedly made its mark on Nigerian culture, and for now, it seems the name "Achalugo" is here to stay.
