DIPLOMAT OF THE WEEK   CHARLES COTESWORTH PINCKNEY Pinckney (February 25, 1746 – August 16, 1825) was born into a powerful family of Southern planters. He practiced law for several years and was elected to the colonial legislature. A supporter of independence from Great Britain, Pinckney served in the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of brigadier-general.  Pinckney received tutoring in London, attended several preparatory schools, and went on to Christ Church College, Oxford, where he heard the lectures of the legal authority Sir William Blackstone and graduated in 1764. Pinckney next pursued legal training at London's Middle Temple and was accepted for admission into the English bar in 1769. KNOWING COUNTRIES THROUGH THEIR CULTURE.

KNOWING COUNTRIES THROUGH THEIR CULTURE. This week on knowing countries through their culture, we will be taking a trip to Togo, a country in West Africa. Togo's culture reflects the influences of its 37 tribal ethnic groups, the largest and most influential of which are the Ewe, Mina, and Kabye. French is the official language of Togo, but many native African languages are spoken there as well. Despite the influence of Western religion, more than half of the people of Togo follow native animistic practices and beliefs. Ewe statuary is characterized by its famous statuettes which illustrate the worship of the twins, the ibéji. Sculptures and hunting trophies were used rather than the more ubiquitous African masks. The wood-carvers of Kloto are famous for their "chains of marriage": two characters are connected by rings drawn from only one piece of wood. The dyed fabric batiks of the artisanal center of Kloto represent stylized and ...

HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE BANK; THE BATTLE OF PHARSALUS

Image
HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE BANK THE BATTLE OF PHARSALUS With the war with Julius Caesar raging, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey) ordered the Roman Senate to flee to Greece while he raised an army in the region. With the immediate threat of Pompey removed, Caesar quickly consolidated his position in the western parts of the Republic. Defeating Pompey's forces in Spain, he shifted east and began preparing for a campaign in Greece. These efforts were hampered as Pompey's forces controlled the Republic's navy. Finally forcing a crossing that winter, Caesar was soon joined by additional troops under Mark Antony. Despite being reinforced, Caesar was still outnumbered by Pompey's army, though his men were veterans and the enemy largely new recruits. Through the summer, the two armies maneuvered against each other, with Caesar attempting to besiege Pompey at Dyrrhachium. The resulting battle saw Pompey win a victory and Caesar was forced to back away. Wary of fighting Caes...

HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE BANK; REAL LIFE STORY OF THE HAUNTED DOLL

Image
HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE BANK; REAL LIFE STORY OF THE HAUNTED DOLL When you think of haunted dolls, it’s likely the creepy old Victorian-looking porcelain kind that springs to mind. None of which you probably have laying around. Still, don’t get too comfortable around any kids toys too soon, though: a Disney’s Frozen Elsa doll that was gifted for Christmas 2013 in the Houston area made headlines earlier this year when it seemingly became haunted. The doll recited phrases from the movie Frozen and sang “Let It Go” when a button on its necklace was pressed. “For two years it did that in English,” mother Emily Madonia said. “In 2015, it started doing it alternating between Spanish and English. There wasn’t a button that changed these, it was just random." The family has owned the doll for more than six years and never changed its batteries. The mother says the doll would randomly begin to speak and sing even with its switch turned off. READ THIS:  10 DIY Daily Students life H...

HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE BANK: HORRIBLE HOTSPOT

HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE BANK: HORRIBLE HOTSPOT.  The awesome ancient world was one hot sizzling place you wouldn't want to visit. It was full of beastly battles, squabbling cities, crackpot Kings, backstabbing politicians and gory games (mmm.... times have changed much, have they?) 1 The Egyptians were fierce but fabulous, especially the Pharaohs. Some even offered their servants jobs for life with amazing travel opportunities! When a Pharaoh died, his servant could be sacrificed so they could travel to the after-life together. 2 They may have loved their mummies but the awesome Egyptians didn't get to rule a mighty empire without being fierce too. In battle, Egyptian soldiers had a hideous habit of hacking off the right hand of each enemy's corpse to prove how many men they'd massacred 3  Everyone goes on about the ancient Greeks being 'civilized' but that really just meant they lived in cities. Some cities like Athens were cult...
