HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE BANK: HORRIBLE HOTSPOT

HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE BANK: HORRIBLE HOTSPOT.

The awesome ancient world was one hot sizzling place you wouldn't want to visit. It was full of beastly battles, squabbling cities, crackpot Kings, backstabbing politicians and gory games (mmm.... times have changed much, have they?)

1
The Egyptians were fierce but fabulous, especially the Pharaohs. Some even offered their servants jobs for life with amazing travel opportunities! When a Pharaoh died, his servant could be sacrificed so they could travel to the after-life together.

2
They may have loved their mummies but the awesome Egyptians didn't get to rule a mighty empire without being fierce too. In battle, Egyptian soldiers had a hideous habit of hacking off the right hand of each enemy's corpse to prove how many men they'd massacred

Everyone goes on about the ancient Greeks being 'civilized' but that really just meant they lived in cities. Some cities like Athens were cultured and clever, while others thought being tough was tops. Most of all, they liked fighting each other.

The greatest Greek of them all wasn't even Greek (or even that great, come to think of it). Alexander the Great was in fact a mean Macedonian. But he did stop the cities scrapping and turned Greece into a mega-empire. Alex was conquering crazy. He declared himself a god and carried on empire-building until he dropped down dead from drinking.

5. Within a few centuries, Alex's empire had been taken over by Greece's rivals.....The rotten Romans. The Romans gave a young politician called Julius Caesar an army and sent him into battle. He conquered all of Gaul (France) and even invaded England and Germany. In the end he got the top job - ruler of Rome. But some senators thought they'd show him what a pain in the neck he'd become......

6.

The rotten Romans ruled the roost for over 400 years! At the height of their gory glory, they held the gladiatorial games.50,000 spectators would pack into the Colosseum in Rome and watch criminals and slaves kill each other and be fed to wild beasts!
