ASUU Strike: NANS divided over suspended ASUU strike

The recently suspended nine-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities has divided officials of the National Association of Nigerian Students. It should be recalled that we earlier reported that ASUU National President, Biodun Ogunyemi, on Wednesday in Abuja, “conditionally” suspended its nine-month strike after a lot of foot-dragging in negotiations by the Federal Government and the lecturers. After suspending the strike, NANS President, Sunday Asefon, in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, said its members would embark on a mass protest should ASUU resume its just suspended strike. The union announced the suspension of the almost 10-month old strike at a press conference held Wednesday morning in Abuja. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, said the ongoing negotiation between the Nigerian government and ASUU has all indications of being the final one. Lawal Shereef The Academic Board of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, has reportedly passed a vote of no confidence on the rector of the institution, Dr. John Adekolawole, citing 21 grounds for its decision. Petroleum ministry spends 116 million on biros,others in a year

Members of the Senate Public Accounts Committee expressed shock on Thursday when the report of the Auditor General for the Federation revealed that officials of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources spent N116m to buy biros, letterhead and toners in one year. The breakdown of the expenditure showed that the ministry spent N14.5m to purchase Schneider biros, N46m to print the ministry’s letterhead and N56m to procure toner for its photocopy machines. The AuGF stated this in his 2015 audit report currently being scrutinised by the Senate committee led by Senator Mathew Urhoghide. The query by the Office of the AuGF reads, “The contract for the supply of Schneider biros worth N14.5m was split into smaller packages of less than N5m each and was awarded to four different companies in order to circumvent the permanent secretary’s approval threshold of N5m. “Similarly, the contract for the printing of the ministry’s letterhead worth N46m was also split and awarded to 11 diff...

ASUU strike: We will shutdown all Private Universities if strike continues-NANS President

Lawal Shereef The new President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Sunday Asefon, has vowed to shut down all private universities in the country should the nine-month strike embarked on by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities continue.   Asefon,who came victorious in the just concluded NANS election said this while speaking on a PUNCH Online interview programme. He lamented that the ongoing strike is the most prolonged industrial action embarked on by the university lecturers.   According to him, NANS would engage the Federal Government representatives and ASUU leaders to find a lasting solution to resolve the stalemate in negotiations between the two arms. ASUU agreed to call off strike before December 9- FG

Lawal Shereef The Federal government,in response to the claim by ASUU President,Biodun Ogunyemi has said that it has delivered on it's offers to the academic body. Ogunyemi had blamed the FG for union’s failure to call off the strike, noting that the lecturers would not return to classes until their salary arrears were paid. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, however, revealed that ASUU agreed at their last meeting with the government team on November 27 to call off their nine-month-old strike before December 9. “The truth of the matter is that a ‘gentleman agreement’ was reached at the last meeting in which ASUU agreed to call off the strike before December 9, 2020, and the minister, in turn, agreed that once the strike is called off, he would get a presidential waiver for ASUU to be paid the remainder of their salaries on or before December 9,” Ngige stated. Lawal Shereef The Academic Staff Union of Universities has on Sunday said it would not end the strike it embarked on until government pays all withheld salaries of it's members. ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a telephone interview with a correspondent of the Punch in Lagos, said government should not expect the lecturers to resume without paying the withheld salaries.  Recall that there were reports on November 27 that the union had agreed to end its strike following the Federal Government’s promise to release N70bn to ASUU as earned allowance. Osun State University to takeover Lautech Teaching Hospital,current jobs safe- Osun SG

Osun State Government has declared that Osun State University has taken over the College of Health Sciences and the former LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Osogbo. It also approved the immediate renaming of the Teaching Hospital to UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital (UNIOSUNTH), Osogbo. This followed the dissolution of the joint ownership of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) by Oyo State and Osun State, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding to effect a new management structure of the institution. Based on the terms of the MoU, the National Universities Commission (NUC) handed over ownership of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, to the Oyo State Government while the Osun state Government took over the College of Health Sciences in Osogbo and the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital. The union leadership reached the consensus during a meeting with the government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment,  Dr Chris Ngige, in Abuja, on Friday. ASUU strike: Ngige optimistic Universities will resume soon

Lawal Shereef The federal government on Friday has continued negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to put an end to the eight-month-old strike action. ASUU embarked on a nationwide strike on March 23 to demand “revitalisation allowance”, earned academic allowances, renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, visitation panels, among other demands. The federal government, last Friday, had made some concessions to the striking university lecturers through their union which they promised to get back at the government for.  The government offered N65 billion to Nigerian universities to address some of the lecturers’ demands. The government also agreed to pay the lecturers their outstanding salaries using an older payment platform, GIFMIS, different from the controversial IPPIS. The union will harmonise the positions of zones and branches at a meeting in Abuja today. While some branches have favoured the calling off of the strike,some others are bent on FG fulfilling all the clauses before the strike is called off,with this,the National body might resort to voting to decide their stance. The Ahmadu Bello University branch agreed with the government on the N40 billion Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
