Sylvester's Death: Taking Responsibility

Taking Responsibility

Who do we hold responsible in times like this? This is the question that pops to mind on hearing the news of Sylvester's death. The parents who some feel didn't note the signs of bullying in their child? The school for trying to cover up the scandal? The bullies who made young Sylvester meet his untimely death? Or even the parents of the bullies for not bringing up their children properly? Who exactly do we cast the blame on?
Incidence like these aren't new to the society. But the bone of contention shouldn't be who to take the blame but how we can all take responsibility and prevent this scenario from repeating itself.
As parents, take responsibility! Observe your children. Watch them for signs of withdrawal or exaggerated confidence. Let them be able to share their deepest secrets and fears with you.
Schools should please take responsibility for the children entrusted to their care! The future of several families and the nation have been put in your hands. Guard them! No slip ups by you in this regard will be tolerated. Parents can't do much when they leave their children with you. Their eyes and ears are restricted for that period, but they trust you to be there for them. Don't break their trust!
Bullies generally have a fundamental problem. Having no idea how to handle the problems that assail them, they vent their anger on people they feel are younger or inferior to them. School counselors and teachers have a responsibility to not just wait for students to walk up to them, they should observe students behaviours and provide the necessary checks to them.              Parents should also take responsibility and note the behaviour of their kids. Any child that exhibits a bullying tendency should be immediately cautioned.

Let's stop pointing fingers and looking for who to apportion blame. These little ones are our future! No one is exempted! Like our elders would say, "It takes a community to raise a child." Let us all quit the blame game and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!
